New Guardians #2 Spoilers and Retro Review.
Here are the primary cast of the New Guardians from an opening panel of the series’ first issue.
How onto the second issue which marks the debut of the cocaine fueled and super-powered super-villain Snowflame in 1988.
He confronted the New Guardians and easily dispatched their heavy hitter Ram page after page after page culminating with Snowflame having his men open fire and seemingly kill all of the New Guardians only two issues into their new series?!
We then get a bit of a flashback of the New Guardians team watching Ram get soundly beaten by Snowflame and how they survive being shot by his men.
That leads to the team invading Snowflame’s compound of debauchery which leads to Snowflame fueling up on blow.
Another battle ensues where Snowflame is aided by his drug-addled party-goers.
While the New Guardians are battling the drugged allies of Snowflame, Ram gets a rematch with Snowflame which includes a dip in the pool.
However, perhaps not how he wanted to “win”, but Ram knocks Snowflame into the compound’s chemical shed causing him and it to explode.
However, the team seems conflicted over this battle with one member leaving her teammates while Extrano contemplates his mortality after he and teammate Jet were seemingly infected with AIDS by the Hemo-Goblin in the series’ first issue.
Like Snowflame in issue #2, the Hemo-Goblin debuted and died in the same issue, but in issue #1.
The Pulse.
This was a bizarre series borne out of the Millennium event. While Snowflame is an absurd villain he’s nowhere near as absurd as Hemo-Goblin. So-so story, but solid art. 4 out of 10.
