Ian Churchill Debuts Marinegirl Alongside Marineman In Support Of UN World Oceans Day 2023!
CBR reports.
…reveal the official Prevented Ocean Plastic poster for UN World Oceans Day 2023. Along with the return of Marineman, the poster also marks the official debut of Marinegirl. “After last year’s successful World Oceans Day programme, I was delighted when Prevented Ocean Plastic asked to feature Marineman again to spearhead their 2023 campaign,” said Churchill. “The feedback from last year suggested kids wanted a female counterpart, so this year we introduce… Marinegirl! I was saving her first appearance for the publication of Marineman Volume 2, but the World Oceans Day demand for the character made debuting her early seem like the right thing to do…”
“We’re happy to welcome Ian Churchill and Marineman back to join us on World Oceans Day,” added Prevented Ocean Plastic director Raffi Schieir, “Not only are they the subject of this year’s poster, but they’re helping us put together colouring and activity sheets to further educate future thought leaders. We all have a part to play and, by learning more, people can equip themselves to make better choices, support responsible sourcing in the circular economy, and help clean up this world for the future.”
…Churchill’s creator-own Marineman comic launched in 2010 and then concluded its six-issue run in 2011. Published by Image Comics, Marineman was nominated for a Best New Series Eisner Award in 2010. The story largely revolves around a biologist and television presenter who also happens to be a superhero tasked with protecting the planet’s oceans. Marineman was also featured in a Prevented Ocean Plastic cover for 2022’s UN World Oceans Day. “I created Marineman because of my love of comic books and the ocean, so to have him prominently supporting this effort to protect the oceans and prevent plastic going beyond the beach so it can be recycled felt like a natural fit to me,” Churchill said at the time. “This is exactly the kind of thing Steve Ocean would be doing if he was a real person.”
